Agnes McGrogan - Big Writing Consultant
Agnes McGrogan has been in education for thirty-six years and has wide experience as a classroom teacher and Senior Manager, including sixteen years of headship in two contrasting schools in Scotland. She also lectured in the English Department of a teacher training facility as a seconded head teacher.
From 2002 to 2005 Agnes was employed as Quality Improvement Officer, having responsibility for English Language from Primary 1 to Secondary 6, with West Dunbartonshire Council. In this capacity she led a working party of cross-sectorial teachers addressing issues around raising attainment in writing, including the assessment of writing.
Agnes worked closely with Ros. Wilson in the capacity of Quality Improvement Officer. She has co-presented on many occasions and is a confident adviser and presenter on raising standards in writing through Big Writing.
The Raising Attainment Working Party, led by Agnes, has developed the West Dunbartonshire Criterion Scale, (WDCS) through adaptation of Ros. Wilson’s Criterion Scale. The WDCS is an accurate formative assessment tool for assessing writing from Level A to Level E. It breaks the Scottish levels down into three sub-levels per whole level, for example Level A1, A2 and A3. The level of detail provided through the WDCS supports teachers both in making accurate judgements and in knowing what the immediate next steps are for each pupil.
Agnes is now a full-time Big Writing consultant available to run courses, conferences, INSET for schools and to provide support for teachers and Senior Managers in schools. She brings a lively and warm personality and great humour to all she does. In addition, Agnes is a trained life coach with a strong interest in personal development and motivation. Agnes is qualified and has the relevant experience to provide consultancy and support in all the following areas within Scotland:
- Ros. Wilson’s ‘Big Writing’
- Managing the English Curriculum
- School self-evaluation
- Pre and post school inspection
- Support and challenge for Senior Managers, including head teachers and depute heads
- Support and challenge for teaching and learning in the classroom
- Raising attainment across the primary curriculum
