Big Writing is a teaching methodology in which pupils learn and develop the ideas, vocabulary and higher level grammatical structures needed to improve their writing almost entirely through talk. The key to Big Writing is “If a child can’t say it, a child can’t write it”.
Published through Oxford University Press, Raising Writing Standards aims to re-present ‘Big Writing’ to both new and existing users. It showcases the breadth and flexibility as well as the many facets of the approach, as a means of raising standards in writing. This book is drawn from the highly successful publication – Strategies for Immediate Impact On Writing Standards (2003) – with new ideas, practical tips, suggestions, guidance and case studies.
The books includes:
- an explanation of the Big Writing Methodology which includes Big Talk, the development of ‘Writing Voice’, through VCOP, Basic Skills and the ‘Writers Toolkit’.
- invaluable assessment support, including the Big Writing Criterion Scale.
- advice on effective leadership and creating a positive school ethos.
- a CD with useful documents, support and case studies.
Ros Wilson has always stated that a school can introduce and implement ‘Big Writing’ at very little cost – using this book, strong leadership and committed, enthusiastic teachers.
